Note: 2013 is the final year the farm will be open to the public! They will switch operations in December to become a goat dairy producing commercial goat cheese.

Mountain Farm is a sustainable, 24-acre lavender, blueberry and dairy goat farm in the Blue Ridge mountains of Western North Carolina, located near Mt. Mitchell, Crabtree Falls and Burnsville. It's just 9 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway (go north on NC Highway 80 from the Parkway at Milepost 344, part of the Mount Mitchell Scenic Byway). Their small herd, hormone and antibiotic-free, includes registered Saanen and Nubian goats. Their fresh milk is collected each morning and then goes into the handcrafted soap and body products they make on the farm.

The Mountain Farm shop features all the items they produce: soap, artisanal bath and spa products, a culinary line of herbs, salt, honey, vinegar, and tea. And don't forget their one-of-a-kind yarn blend made from farm animals.

A variety of heavenly lavender blooms from June to August. Lavender bushes also creates a natural border for Mountain Farm’s meditation labyrinth.

Picnic on the property, enjoy refreshments from the Mountain Farm shop, sit in the lavender field and inhale, cut-your-own lavender and pick summer blueberries.

Mountain Farm is free to visit. Stop by Wednesdays-Saturdays 10 AM – 5 PM and Sundays 1 PM – 5 PM. Get a self-guided map in their shop. They also offer regular guided tours on Saturday and Sunday at 1 PM for only $5. Contact them to schedule your own guided tour at another time. Also look for them at the Mt. Mitchell Craft Fair.

Mountain Farm is an interactive, working farm. Starting in 2012, Mountain Farm offers bi-monthly “Introduction to Backyard Farming” workshops. Come learn all about milking, pitching bales, and animal health. The focus will be on goats, baby doll sheep, chickens, and bees. They also offer Soap Making Workshops.

Mountain Farm is at 125 Copperhead Bend, Burnsville, NC, 28714 (GPS 35.849,-82.176). It's 48 miles from downtown Asheville - about an hour drive. If you are driving the Blue Ridge Parkway, it's just 9 miles north from the NC Highway 80 intersection (Milepost 344) past Mt. Mitchell. Nearby are Roaring Fork Falls and Setrock Creek Falls.

Lavender Festival
June 15-16, 2013

A celebration of all things lavender takes place each Father's Day Weekend at Mountain Farm, showcasing many uses for lavender with workshops on topics ranging from cooking to mead-making to soaps to distilling essential oils. This is the last year for the festival since the owners will close the farm to the public at the end of 2013 to spend more time with their grandchildren!

“As people have come and loved the lavender – loved being in it and smelling it – the festival has grown in popularity more than we ever imagined,” said Mountain Farm owner Marilyn Cade. “There’s a wide array of things you can do with lavender.”

In addition to workshops, the festival features a lavender labyrinth, garden tours, cultivation tips, craft vendors, live mountain music from local musicians Bruce Green and Rob Levin, and a festival café. Attendees are also allowed to cut their own lavender bouquet. Lavender-related items for sale range from bath & body products to teas, vinegars and honey, not to mention cookbooks and seasoned salts.

Hours for Lavender Festival are 10 AM to 5 PM both days. Admission price is $10 per person, with children 10 and under admitted at no cost. Free parking, with shuttle service, is available.
