12 Bones Smokehouse is a casual barbecue restaurant that specializes in slow-smoked, babyback ribs with sauces inspired by the great barbecue regions of the country. It's down-home cooking in a very laid back, funky atmosphere. It's a local's favorite and only open for lunch and early dinner (until 4 PM). It's President Obama's favorite restaurant in Asheville - he dined there during both of his trips to town!
They have two locations. One is near downtown Asheville on the French Broad River in the River Arts District. The other is south of Asheville in Arden. Their menu features a range of tasty smoked meats (baby back ribs, chicken, pulled pork, turkey, and beef brisket) as well as vegetarian items. Entrees ($5-$18) come with cornbread and two sides (mac n cheese, smoked potato salad, jalapeno cheese grits, baked beans, mashed sweet taters, cucumber salad, collard greens, sweet vinegar cole slaw, buttered green beans and corn pudding). Everything is fresh and they smoke our meats for a long, slow lingering time.
The River Arts Location is at 5 Riverside Drive, phone 828-253-4499, open Monday through Friday 11am to 4pm (closed Saturday & Sunday). They are roughly 1.4 miles from downtown Asheville: Take Patton Ave. west to Clingman Ave. (towards West Asheville) Take a left onto Clingman Ave. at The Grey Eagle before the bridge. Take a right onto Lyman St. and go across the railroad tracks.
The Arden location at 3578 Sweeten Creek Rd, phone 828-687-1395, open Tuesday thru Saturday 11am to 4pm, closed Sunday & Monday.
