Grandfather Glows: Firefly Viewing Lottery Opens May 22

Grandfather Mountain puts on one of the most remarkable natural events in the Southern Appalachians, and getting in requires a lottery.

Each summer, synchronous fireflies and blue ghost fireflies light up the northern hardwood forests of Linville during peak mating season. On a dark night in the gorge, the display is mesmerizing.

The lottery opens May 22 and runs through May 28. Entries are $5 per person. Winners may purchase up to six event tickets at $40–50 each. No waiting list. Winners are notified May 29 and June 3.

The events run mid-June through mid-July, 7 to 11 pm, on three evenings. Exact dates are announced May 21. Each night starts with a naturalist-led program, then moves to the viewing area after dark. The experience is accessible for wheelchair users and people with limited mobility. No flash photography, no pets, no alcohol.
