Explore another side of Asheville’s local shopping scene at local hemp and CBD. From Merrimon Avenue to West Asheville, find places to browse, compare products, and ask questions before bringing something home. New to CBD? A little label reading and a conversation with the staff are good places to start. See our featured shops below.
Choosing a Hemp & CBD Shop
Start with helpful service. The best CBD shops are friendly places where you can take your time and get clear answers. Tell the staff what you’re shopping for, your budget, and whether you want to avoid THC. A good conversation should leave you understanding the label, ingredients, and differences between products.
Get to know the brand. A local storefront is a great starting point, but ask who grows the hemp and who makes the finished product. If buying local matters to you, find out which items are actually grown or made in the Asheville area.
Look beyond the packaging. Ask to see an independent laboratory report, also called a certificate of analysis or COA, for the batch or product you are considering. Check that the batch number matches the package, and ask staff to explain the CBD and THC results and any testing for pesticides, heavy metals, or other contaminants. A “lab tested” sticker alone doesn’t tell the whole story.
Be clear about what’s inside. Hemp and CBD aren’t interchangeable. Shops may carry CBD alongside intoxicating THC products, so don’t assume everything on the shelf has the same effects. Ask about each ingredient and the amount per serving. Avoid brands promising to cure medical conditions. The FDA identifies inaccurate labeling, contaminants, and unproven health claims as concerns with CBD products. Read the FDA’s CBD consumer guide.
Questions to Ask Before You Buy
- Where is the hemp grown, and where is this product made?
- Can you show me the independent lab report (COA) for this exact batch?
- How much CBD and THC are in one serving and in the entire package?
- Could this product cause intoxication?
- What does “full spectrum,” “broad spectrum,” or “isolate” mean on this label?
- What other ingredients are included, such as sweeteners, allergens, or added botanicals?
- What are the storage instructions, expiration date, and return policy?
Plan Your Visit
Check the shop’s website for current hours, product availability, and age requirements, and bring a photo ID. Leave time to explore nearby shops and galleries, too. See our Asheville Shopping Guide for more stops to add to your day.
Considering CBD for a health concern? Talk with your healthcare professional before using it, especially if you take medication. CBD can interact with medicines and cause drowsiness. See FDA guidance.
