Appalachian Rivers Aquarium, Bryson City

A museum on the banks of the Tuckasegee River in downtown Bryson City houses one of Western North Carolina's most educational water experiences! Appalachian Rivers Aquarium brings native freshwater ecosystems to life through more than 4,000 gallons of exhibits. The museum showcases the fish, amphibians, and reptiles living in local rivers and streams. It is a great place to visit almost year-round (it is closed in January).

More than 15 fish species swim through the tanks—bass, trout, and lesser-known species you rarely see anywhere else. Terrariums display crustaceans, amphibians, and reptiles that call these mountain waterways home.

The crown jewel is the Eastern Hellbender Salamander habitat. It is one of the Southeast's largest habitats for this endangered species.

Two adult Hellbenders live here in a tank designed unlike any other. The elevated habitat features clear viewing from underneath, letting visitors crawl below (the carpeted space fits several kids comfortably) to watch these rare salamanders from a belly-up perspective as they rest under rocks or navigate their environment. It's a view you won't find elsewhere.
