About E.W. Grove
Edwin Wiley Grove built Grove Park Inn in 1913, thanks to the millions of dollars he made through his "Paris Medicine Company" based in Tennessee. In his late 20s, he created Grove's Tasteless Chill Tonic that became an overnight sensation and household name for decades.
The Tonic was created as a preventative and relief of malaria and its resulting chills and fever. The chill tonic was so popular the British army made it standard issue for every soldier going off to mosquito infested lands and, by 1890, more bottles of Grove’s Tasteless Chill Tonic were sold than bottles of Coca-Cola.
He created other popular remedies for malaria and the common cold. Grove suffered from bronchitis and insomnia, and his doctor advised him to come to Asheville in 1898 for the curative mountain air. He fell in love with the city and built Grove Park Inn and many other projects.
The 100-year old Grove Park Inn has enjoyed a long and colorful history with many distinguished guests including Eleanor Roosevelt, Henry Ford, John D. Rockefeller, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. The list of United States Presidents staying at Grove Park Inn is impressive…
