The goal of the Appalachian Barn Alliance is capture the agricultural heritage of the Southern Appalachians which is exemplified by the barn.  The Southern Appalachian barn does not look like the barn you may have seen in the Midwest or New England. These rugged structures are a testament to the hardy folks who tackled the terrain to build them. barn tour ABA is documenting the heritage of the area by focusing on Madison County, NC (just north of Asheville), agricultural history through photos, oral histories and architectural details of significant barns in Madison County. To share this with the public, the ABA has created tours: one type is a simple self-guided driving tour by geographic region targeted for the tourists as well as local residents. You can download tour information (see below) or pick up the brochures at any of the visitor centers in each of the three Madison County towns or at the NC Welcome Center on Interstate 26. Check their websites for locations and hours. The other type is a guided tour which is led by the ABA researcher at times you can arrange to suit your personal schedule– where you follow in your own vehicle.
