Here's a local's favorite! 12 Bones is a casual barbecue restaurant in the River Arts District of Asheville that specializes in slow-smoked meats with sauces inspired by the great barbecue regions of the country. It's down-home cooking in a very laid back, funky atmosphere. It's only open 11 AM-4 PM on Monday-Friday. It's President Obama's favorite restaurant in Asheville - he dined there during both of his trips to town! Long lines snaking from the ordering counter are not uncommon.
In February 2017, they moved to a very cool space just down the road from their original location. Now located at 5 Foundy Street, just off Lyman Street that runs along the French Broad River, it's part of "The Foundation" collection of old warehouses covered in graffiti that are being renovated inside while keeping the outside gritiness. Next door to 12 Bones, The Wedge Brewery is adding it's second location.
12 Bones now has twice the seating and two new smokers for melt-in-your-mouth baby back ribs, chicken, pulled pork, turkey, and beef brisket. Entrees ($5-$22) come with cornbread and two sides (such as mac n cheese, smoked potato salad, jalapeno cheese grits, baked beans, mashed sweet taters, cucumber salad, collard greens, sweet vinegar cole slaw, buttered green beans and corn pudding). Everything is fresh, and they smoke our meats for a long, slow lingering time.
Plenty of picnic tables create fun outdoor dining areas. More outdoor spaces coming soon.
An eclectic mix of old, new and repurposed in the dining room.
