This is much to be excited about this year with even more to enjoy by visitors to the Asheville area in the North Carolina mountains.

Here are our top choices for what's new in Asheville for 2010:

Altamont Theatre: A new Asheville downtown theatre, conservatory & music venue will open at 18 Church Street by Fall 2010. Historic renovations began in August 2009 on one of Asheville's first LEED Certified projects under the guidance of award-winning architect Patti Glazer. The not-for-profit Altamont Theatre presents inspiring professional theatre and music events featuring world-class actors, singers, directors and designers. The Altamont Theatre Conservatory prepares talented students for performing arts careers and further education opportunities, and introduces inquisitive beginners to stage and on-camera adventures through classes, workshops and performance experience.

Wayfinding Signs: Visitors to Asheville will get around town easier this year with a new $1.8 million system of signs and information kiosks. The new signs, created by local artists, will extend beyond downtown to direct visitors to the River Arts District, West Asheville and Biltmore Village as well as farther afield to Weaverville, Woodfin, Black Mountain and Montreat. The new system will include 240 roadway signs, 26 pedestrian signs, 40 parking deck signs and 13 three-paneled informational kiosks that will help visitors navigate downtown and direct them to attractions and historic sites around the county. The more than 300 signs and kiosks should be in place by early March.

Blue Ridge Parkway 75th: Celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the most visited unit of the National Park Service system, throughout 2010 with many special events. The Blue Ridge Parkway Visitors Center is located in Asheville along the Parkway. See our updated Blue Ridge Parkway Guide to plan your trip.

Biltmore Estate: Antler Village, a pedestrian-friendly village near the Winery at Biltmore, opens in May 2010. It will include a new exhibition space, village green with live entertainment, dining, shopping and a new outdoor adventure center. As part of this project, Biltmore Winery will be enhanced to offer a newly designed tour and tasting areas. The Biltmore Concert Series for the summer has been expanded to 10 shows!

Park Square ParkDowntown Park: The much anticipated Pack Square Park will be completed year. This 6.5-acre park in Asheville's historic central square downtown has been undergoing a major renovation since 2005. Both ends of the Park opened in 2009: the historic Pack Square and beautiful Roger McGuire Green in front of City Hall. The middle section, Reuter Terrace, will be completed by Spring 2010.

Hotel IndigoHotel Indigo is a new "hip" boutique hotel situated in the middle of downtown. It offers a blend of modern contemporary living with the best in traditional hotel hospitality. The "artsy and eclectic" tower opened late in 2009 with 100 hotel rooms and 12 condominium units. Hotel Indigo is a relatively new brand of InterContinental Hotels Group. See our photo review of Hotel Indigo!

Beer City USA: Asheville's beer scene will continue to grow. We have an amazing selection of bars, brewpubs, microbreweries, and restaurants for a city of its size. (See our Asheville Beer & Brewery Guide.) Readers of Examiner.com in New York City voted Asheville as the top Beer City in America (tied with Portland, OR)! More than 50 local brews can be sampled around town at the breweries and pubs. Lexington Avenue Brewery will open in January 2010 in downtown Asheville, adding another brewery to the several already downtown.

New Zip Line Canopy Tours: The first canopy zip line tour in the North Carolina Smokies opened in the Nantahala National Forest in 2009. The new Plumtree Canopy Tours north of Asheville kicks off the season on Memorial Day Weekend. Another canopy tour will open Spring 2010 at Pigeon River, west of Asheville just across the Tennessee state line. This one will include a spectacular view and flight over waterfalls and along 60 foot high rock cliffs. It will also fly over the Pigeon River with rafters below, and include ten zip line experiences, four to six sky bridges and water crossings. For the Birds: Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park will celebrate the grand opening of its Birdhouse exhibit space on Saturday, March 27, 2010. The Birdhouse features interpretive signage and exhibits designed to educate guests on the variety of birds that occur in Chimney Rock. Organized by season, the permanent exhibit includes educational information and images of some of the Park’s more common birds, like the dozens of warblers and vireos, as well as birds less commonly seen such as Swainson’s Warblers and Peregrine Falcons. Chimney Rock is an official site on the NC Birding Trail and offers birding walks and programs throughout the year with Ornithologist Simon Thompson. The Park will host its 2nd Annual Flock to the Rock on September 25 and 26 featuring birding workshops, guided walks and other programs. See our Chimney Rock Guide. Caving / Spelunking: Mountain Adventure Guides now offers the first Caving Trips for the Asheville area (Worley's Cave in Bluff City, TN, about 1.25 hours drive north of Asheville). Temperatures within a cave remain constant at about 55 degrees. Explore the beauty of natural cave features and formations and learn a bit about the life and geology of an undeveloped limestone cave. Worley's Cave is un unspoiled, "wild cave" that is known for its voluminous size. It has more than 37,000 feet of mapped passages on two levels. There are rooms more than 75 feet wide and 250 feet long, with high ceilings that often exceeds 100 feet. It is noted for its beautiful formations within the eight to ten miles of passages. Your trip begin with an introduction by your guide, followed by an approximately 3 hour underground caving experience. See our Outdoors Guide for more adventures.
