Interesting History
The Haywood Park Hotel was once home to grand department stores. In 1923, Bon Marche department store moved into the new building. Ivey’s, another well-known department store, took over the building in 1937, staying until 1976. It was one of the last downtown stores to close after Asheville Mall opened in 1972. The hotel opened in 1986, one of the first signs of revitalization in a downtown that was mostly vacant. Recently, they have upgraded all the rooms, including repainting and installing flat-screen televisions.
