Directed by Academy Award-winner Anthony Minghella (The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley) and based on Frazier's Civil War novel, Cold Mountain tells the story of Inman (Jude Law), a wounded confederate soldier who is on a perilous journey home to his mountain community, hoping to reunite with his pre-war sweetheart, Ada (Nicole Kidman). In his absense, Ada struggles to survive, and revive her father's farm with the help of intrepid young drifter Ruby (Renee Zellweger).

Cold Mountain Cast

Miramax Films and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures are proud to announce that Donald Sutherland ("MASH," "Ordinary People," "Space Cowboys"), Jena Malone ("The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys," "Life As a House," "Stepmom"), Kathy Baker (Miramax's "Cider House Rules"), Ray Winstone ("Sexy Beast"), Ethan Suplee ("American History X," "Remember the Titans," Miramax's "Chasing Amy"), James Gammon ("The Iron Giant," "The Cell," "Life or Something Like It") and Charles Hunnam ("Queer as Folk," "Nicholas Nickleby") have joined the cast of "Cold Mountain," which is adapted and being directed by Academy Award(R) winner Anthony Minghella, based on Charles Frazier's best-selling and National Book Award winning Civil War novel of the same name. Principal photography on the film is scheduled to begin July 15th on location in Romania. The cast of "Cold Mountain" already includes Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger, Jude Law, Natalie Portman, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Giovanni Ribisi, Brendan Gleeson and Charlie Hunnam.

"Cold Mountain," which will be filmed in the United States and rural Romania, will reunite Minghella with his Academy Award winning production team from "The English Patient." Editor Walter Murch, director of photography John Seale, costume designer Ann Roth and composer Gabriel Yared, who also worked together on the production of Minghella's "The Talented Mr. Ripley," will be joined by production designer Dante Ferretti, nominated for six Academy Awards, to bring to life Minghella's adaptation of the best selling novel by Charles Frazier.

In a story in which nature and weather play an integral part, the filmmakers have chosen to combine locations in the United States with the remote mountains and valleys of Transylvania, Romania, to recreate a primitive and unforgiving landscape.

The film is a co-production between Miramax and MGM and is being produced by Academy Award winner Sydney Pollack and William Horberg (through Pollack and Minghella's Mirage Enterprises) and Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa (through their Bona Fide Productions).

"I hope to do justice to the vast emotional and visual landscapes of the story and am delighted to be helped once again in those efforts by my film family of Ann, Walter, Gabriel and John as well as Script Supervisor, Dianne Dreyer, First Assistant Director, Steve Andrews and casting directors David Rubin and Ronna Kress," and the legendary production designer Dante Ferretti, who is a tremendous new addition to the team," said Anthony Minghella.
