The Altamont is pleased to exhibit the work of Nathaniel Galka from February 25 - May 25, 2011. This exhibition is free to members of the public.
The Nathaniel Galka exhibition beautifully captures the work of the artist as it showcases an array of wondrous canvasses upon which are painted Galka’s personal interpretation of nature, with all of its color, drama, and movement. "There’s no denying that nature is theatrical” said Galka. “As with most of us, we feel nature is continuously unveiling a sublime dramatic performance that is riveting to watch. There are always dramas and battles, with this game of tug and war being laid out for all to see. No matter how these events play out, you will still be able to stumble into the quiet charm and the delight of her sincere grace. In these simple moments, the surrounding quiet and stillness become the key players on nature’s main stage."
A graduate of Columbus College of Art and Design, Galka holds an MFA from Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois. The artist currently lives and works from his studio in Eastern Tennessee.
“We are delighted to feature Nathaniel Galka in our new space in collaboration with Gallery Minerva” said Brian Lee, Executive Director of The Altamont. “Our goal is to bring outstanding artists who are advancing toward new horizons in the art world to the gallery of our newly renovated multi-use building, and we feel Galka is one such innovator.”
The Altamont in downtown Asheville held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its newly renovated multi-use facility at 9 a.m. on November 5, 2010. After undergoing a lengthy and complex renovation with a total project cost exceeding $3 million dollars, the ribbon-cutting ceremony marks the opening of what will soon be the first LEED certified building in downtown Asheville. The landmark, built in 1895, has been renovated to qualify for historic-preservation recognition, as well as the stringent guidelines for the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design certification for sustainability.
“This project was all about finding a creative way to bring professional musical theatre to downtown Asheville,” said Executive Director Brian Lee. “We wanted to give our non-profit, Altamont Theatre Company, a home that is paid for through its own separate for-profit ventures. This way, the theatre can put most of its money toward producing top-notch performances, instead of toward hefty rent payments."
The main floor houses a state-of-the-art black-box theatre seating approximately 120 people that can be used for a variety of performances and special events. The lower level features a lobby with gallery space for artwork, bar, restrooms, and event support spaces including dressing rooms and a green room. The landmark’s six fully furnished short-term condo suites that occupy the top two floors blend history, the arts, and eco-friendliness into an experience unparalleled by other local rental offerings. The Altamont is home to Altamont Theatre Company, Asheville’s professional black-box musical theatre and conservatory. It relies on the community’s generous support for its projected growth to provide New York City quality musical theatre.
